Increase the Efficiency in Your Attic With New Insulation

Your attic is designed to protect your home from cold, heat, humidity, and other environmental elements. However, it can’t do its job unless it’s insulated properly. That’s where Insulation Co. comes on. We specialize in the installation of attic insulation for homeowners in the Seattle area. Properly installing attic insulation involves several important steps, including removing old insulation, sealing air leaks, choosing the right type and amount of insulation, installing the insulation correctly, and inspecting the attic to ensure that the job has been done right. By following these steps, you can ensure that your home is more energy-efficient and comfortable year-round.

You owe it to yourself to take advantage of our 25+ years of industry experience and 10-year insulation warranty. Contact us today for a free estimate!

Types of Insulation for Your Attic

Blown-In insulation

Attic insulation is key to controlling your home temperature throughout the year. Blown-in insulation is one of the most effective ways to insulate your attic. We often recommend blown-in insulation for unfinished attics. It’s an affordable choice that involves a large tube that blows out insulation, which can be evenly dispersed to hard-to-reach areas. Blown-in insulation can be made of cellulose, fiberglass, or similar materials that are thick, dense, and lumpy in consistency. The pro of blown-in attic insulation is that it can fill small spaces and will add protection against insects and vermin. The two main types of blown-in insulation are cellulose and fiberglass. With a proper blower machine, installation is simple and quick.

Batts and Rolls insulation

Also known as blanket insulation, batt insulation comes in pre-cut, flat pieces that look like a blanket. It prevents heat and cold from passing through. Both products are equally effective in insulating your ceiling space. The main difference is the method of installing the insulation. While rolls can be rolled out between the ceiling joists, insulation batts are installed in pieces. If you want to install insulation across the joists to eliminate thermal bridging, and if your ceiling space has very few obstacles and a lot of room to work with, installing insulation rolls may be a suitable option. However, if your ceiling is tight and has some additional obstacles, such as ventilation pipes or electrical cables, then it would be easier to install insulation batts, as rolled insulation will tend to catch more on these obstructions.

closed cell spray foam insulation

Spray foam insulation can be applied to rafters or the attic floor. Because a sealed attic space doesn’t have any contact with the outside air, sometimes spray foam is applied only to the attic floor to replace other forms of insulation like fiberglass and cellulose. Spray foam is created by combining isocyanate and polyol resin, which makes polyurethane. This has been used as an insulation material since the 1970s, and it is effective because the final foam contains a low-conductivity gas in its cells. Closed-cell spray foam creates a proper air seal and is considered one of the best insulating materials. However, each house is different so not every house will perform with certain insulation materials as well as others. It is always recommended to speak with a professional before deciding which insulation is best.

cellulose insulation

Cellulose is made of recycled materials and can be used to fill enclosed spaces like attics. Cellulose is used as insulation because it is plentiful and packs tighter than fiberglass insulation. Cellulose can be blown into your attic with our special blower machine. Cellulose is considered an eco-friendly product compared to fiberglass and foam insulation.  The R-value of cellulose insulation is significantly higher than fiberglass, and the higher the R-value, the better the insulation is at preserving thermal efficiency, meaning your home temperature will be more stable.

Benefits of New Attic Insulation Installation

Lower Utility Bills

Did you know that heating and cooling can make up 50% to 70% of the energy used in the average American home? If your attic is poorly insulated or not insulated at all, you’ll pay more in utility costs.

Improved Interior Comfort

Attic insulation is one of the most effective ways to ensure your home is comfortable year-round. It can allow heat to flow from warmer areas to colder spaces.

A Significant Upgrade

Yes, you can patch old insulation. However, by removing it completely, you’ll enjoy highly efficient insulation that offers unmatched performance and energy efficiency.

Enhanced Indoor Air Quality

Unfortunately, old insulation can serve as a breeding ground for mold and mildew, leading to poor air quality. With new insulation, you can drastically improve the air you and your family breathe.

Identification of Underlying Issues

Once we remove your old insulation, we can get a better look at your attic and identify potential issues that can be resolved before the new installation gets installed. These may include leaks, mold, or roof damage.

Safer Home Structure

Since insulating your attic slows down heat buildup, it will prevent mold that often accumulates in moist, cool areas. New insulation is a great way to protect your overall home structure

This step ensures that the new insulation can function effectively without being weighed down or compressed by the old material.

This step prevents heat loss through the roof and ensures that the insulation can work at its maximum potential. Common areas to seal include around vents, pipes, and the attic access door.

The insulation type you choose will depend on factors such as your climate,  and home age and structure. Common insulation types include fiberglass batts, blown-in cellulose, and spray foam insulation. The amount of insulation needed will depend on the size of your attic and the R-value you want to achieve.

After the insulation has been installed, it’s important to inspect the attic to ensure that it has been done correctly. This inspection ensures that there are no remaining gaps or leaks that could compromise the insulation’s effectiveness.
